Customs Officer working alone dies suddenly after being found in medical distress

Oct 18  OTTAWA ... Members of the National Board of Directors of the Customs Excise Union Douanes Accise (CEUDA) join together today and extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Customs Officer Adam Angel.

Officer Angel was working alone at the Port of Roosville, British Columbia, during the midnight shift over the early morning hours of October 17, 2004.  He was found in acute medical distress by a fellow Customs Officer who was arriving to relieve him for the day-shift.  Despite the fact that all efforts were immediately deployed to assist him, emergency medical personnel who had been called in to help him pronounced him dead shortly after their arrival.

“While we are waiting for and expect to receive further details regarding Officer Angel’s death, this tragedy highlights the Union’s longstanding concerns that Customs Officers, especially those assigned to remote locations across the country, must never work alone,” said Ron Moran, National President of CEUDA, representing 10, 500 members, of whom 4,200 are this country’s front-line uniformed Customs Officers.

Moran adds that, “for now, our attention is focused on providing Officer Angel’s family with all the support we can while they mourn the loss of a loved one.  And while we will work to assist them through this devastating situation, we will also endeavour to uncover the circumstances that led to his death.”
