Excise Union members protest NOV 20, 2002 – Some 1,000 Chiefs, Superintendents and Managers of Canada Customs are meeting at what CEUDA thinks is a big-nothing-to-do powwow this week in Niagara Falls to pat each other on the back and give each other pep talks to boost morale and convince themselves they’re doing a great job ensuring Canada’s security at points of entry. To do so, they’ll
spend anywhere near or in excess of a hard earned $1,000,000 of
taxpayers’ dollars for travel, accommodations, meeting room
rental, and meal costs. “A $1,000,000 would
pay for 20 full-time Customs Officers for a full year,” admits a
disgruntled Fred Milligan, President of the Niagara Falls District
Branch, Customs Excise Union – the union representing all
Customs Officers who work at all of Canada’s points of entry. “At a time when Canada
Customs needs more frontline Officers at land border points of
entry, and when CEUDA’s been informed of rumblings that local
Canada Customs managers have been quietly told to prepare for a
10% budget cut, this is a shameful waste of money that’s
importantly needed elsewhere,” asserts Steve Pellerin-Fowlie,
3rd National Vice-President, CEUDA. A demonstration by
members of the Customs Excise Union will take place.
