Sarnia work refusal Bluewater Bridge closes. Within 40 minutes 14 managers are on site, the bridge is reopened. At 12:30 p.m. Director gives letter to all Officers, saying there will not be a health and safety investigation, ordering all to return to work, and threatening sanctions: “Your continued refusal to report to work will be considered as unauthorized absence and you will not be paid for the remainder of your shift. In addition, disciplinary action may be taken, which could include a financial penalty.” Letter ignores issue of A&D Lookout. Although most Officers considered defying the back-to-work order, all decided to return to work and wait for advice from legal counsel on January 16, after which they will not be so willing to be bullied by a corrupt employer. At 12:35 p.m. the back-to-work order is grieved, and a pre-grievance consultation immediately ensues. Superintendent informs the A&D Lookout had been issued “in error and was now cancelled”. Grievor voices utter disgust, says CEUDA will immediately call media. A&D Lookout is suddenly reissued with caution "subject is not known to be headed for Canada". At no time did Labour Canada become involved. All return-to-work orders and threats were given by CBSA Headquarters. All managers in Sarnia refuse to comment, referring all questions to Director. |
